My 2024 Outer Banks sometimes shuts off at stoplights or signs, which I know is normal. But it doesn’t happen every time. Does anyone know what controls when it does this? Is there a specific reason or setting?
It depends on things like battery charge, engine temperature, and oil temperature. All these factors can change how the stop/start system works. Totally normal.

Does it also depend on HVAC settings?
@Emmy
Yeah, I’ve noticed if the AC is on and the car warms up inside, it’ll start the engine again to cool things down.
@Emmy
I’ve noticed that too. On a warm day with the windows open, it stays running. But with the windows closed and the AC on, it shuts off more often.

This is the correct explanation.
I don’t mind the feature, just trying to understand how it works. Thanks for all the info!

It also depends on how far you press the brake pedal. My F-150 wouldn’t always turn off unless I pushed it all the way down.
@Pax
I figured that out too. I’d use it to impress passengers by pretending the truck knew when the light was about to change!

Haha, that’s great! I had a ‘94 Explorer that didn’t need the key to stay running. I’d hand the key to passengers while driving and watch their reactions. Priceless!
The stop/start feature usually works only when the brake pedal is fully pressed. If you don’t press it all the way, the engine will stay on.

Exactly. If you press lightly on the brake, it’ll keep running.
Do you ever use sport mode? I think the engine doesn’t shut off in that mode.

I use sport mode partly to avoid auto stop/start. Sure, there’s a button to turn it off, but sport mode has other perks too. I’m hesitant to install an aftermarket kit to permanently disable it, but I do think all that starting and stopping can wear out the starter faster.
If it bothers you, just press the button on the top center of the dash to turn off auto stop/start.
You can adjust the dash settings to explain why the system shuts off or doesn’t. It’s under the fuel and auto stop/start menu. Let me know if you need help finding it—I can check my Bronco later.
I’ve disabled auto start/stop in my settings, so it doesn’t turn back on. No need to buy a special kit.
I still drive my ‘66 with a 289 engine and stock 4.11 axles. It doesn’t have any of this electronic stuff. Modern cars are neat, but older ones just keep things simpler and more reliable.
If you want to disable it, just press the ‘A’ button near the radio. It’s simple.

Or you could get a bypass kit so you don’t have to press it every time. Those kits save you the hassle, especially if you dislike the feature.
