I currently have a 2020 Mazda 3 HB, but I’ve been wanting something with a bit more space and a higher seat. I’m looking at a 2022 Outer Banks since I don’t do off-roading, but I’d like to take it to the mountains in winter.
Anyone here driving the 22 Outer Banks? Have most of the issues been fixed, or are recalls still a thing? I work from home, so I mostly drive around town and occasionally do a 60-mile trip. Planning to keep it in eco mode since saving gas is a big deal these days.
I have some positive equity on my Mazda and plan to use that for the new loan. Thanks for any insights!
The transmission isn’t the best, especially at low speeds. I keep mine in sport mode, which helps. I have the Badlands package, and while it’s decent, the build quality could be better. Even the sound system feels rough on the ears. If I could go back, I might pick a different vehicle.
Outer Banks has a 1.5L 3-cylinder engine, and it can be a bit noisy. Definitely do a good test drive and listen to the engine. If you buy, try to get one under warranty so you can add an extended one.
The 2021 and 2022 models had some issues. I’d go for a 2023 or newer, but be ready for more maintenance compared to your Mazda. Ford tends to need fluid changes more often.
Maybe look into an Escape hybrid if you’re just sticking to paved roads for mountain trips. But definitely test it out first to see what fits you best.

The Escape has the same engine, which could be an issue. Maybe check out Honda or Toyota for small SUVs too.

Yeah, price is a bit different between those brands. And I think the hybrids have a 2.5L 4-cylinder, not the 1.5L 3-cylinder… could be wrong, though.
I have a 2021 Outer Banks. The 18” wheels give it a bit more height compared to the Big Bend with 17”. I put all-terrain tires on mine and still get over 30 mpg. The cabin space is good for me, but taller folks might feel differently. The 1.5L engine can be jerky at times, but premium fuel has helped smooth it out.
I have a 2022 Big Bend, and it’s been great. I used to drive a midsize sedan, and I love the extra space. I’ve had two recalls, but the dealership came to my house to fix them. I actually appreciate recalls; I’d rather a company address issues than ignore them like some other brands did in the past.
I have a 2022 OBX, and it’s roomy! Perfect for camping trips. I mostly bought it for the look… love the boxy shape. I get around 25-28 mpg with my current tires, but it was higher with stock ones. It handles rocky trails and snow really well too.
I wouldn’t choose this for saving on gas. The 1.5L engine somehow does worse on mpg than my old V6. It’s solid for commuting and does well in bad weather, but you might miss the handling of your Mazda.
