Hi there. I drive a 2.3L Bronco and was wondering if using eco mode all the time could be harmful to the transmission or engine compared to using regular mode?
Not really. Eco mode just does the following:
- Reduces throttle response.
- If your car is automatic, it changes the shift points to make them smoother.
- Switches to 2-wheel drive if it was in a different mode before.

From my experience with different cars, eco mode mainly affects throttle response, just like you said. Even electric cars behave this way. You save more fuel by gently accelerating instead of going full throttle at a light.
I’ve been driving in eco mode for almost 30k miles. I drive a 2023 2.3 base model and get between 20 and 23 miles per gallon, depending on how much highway driving I do. No issues so far.
Just to warn you… although there’s no actual evidence from Ford or anywhere else, some might say driving in eco mode could potentially cause major damage to your engine. The effects could be permanent. No research backs this up, but it’s definitely something to consider. Might be safer to keep the car parked forever.

Do you have any proof of that?

That was sarcasm. You’re fine. Drive in eco mode as much as you want.

Backing up your car can cause mystery damage too. Better to park it and throw away the keys.
I don’t think so. Just wondering, what’s your fuel mileage? I always use sport mode and get around 16-17 miles per gallon.

When I drive super carefully in eco mode (all highway with cruise control at 65 mph), I get about 20 mpg. Normal driving gives me around 18 mpg, mostly on the highway.

I average 19.5 mpg over 20k miles. I don’t drive crazy, but I’m not super slow either.

I drive a Wildtrak with the 2.7 engine, and I get about 20.1 mpg using a mix of 2-wheel drive, sport mode, normal, and very rarely eco mode.
