Bronco making a strange noise on startup… anyone else?

I have a 2023 Ford Bronco with the 2.7L EcoBoost, completely stock, no mods. Lately, I’ve noticed it makes a rattling noise for about 3-4 seconds when I do a cold start. Has anyone else had this issue? It’s still under factory warranty and has under 9000 miles. Last oil change was at 5000 miles.

Your cam phasers are likely shot.

Just get them replaced before they fail completely and cause bigger problems. Trust me on this one!

Yep. They’ll probably just ask what kind of loaner you want.

@Finnian
They might not even ask that much.

Definitely the cam phasers.

I’ve heard the same sound in a Navigator and a G3 Raptor. Not a mechanic, but sounds familiar.

Sounds like the cam phasers. There have been a lot of these needing replacements.

There was a recall on the F-150 for cam phasers but not on the Bronco. Still, it’s definitely the phasers if you’re hearing that sound.

@Dallas
Yeah, my bad. Not a recall for the Bronco, but plenty of them need phaser replacements under warranty.

I’m a Ford mechanic—sounds like the phasers to me too. I saw this a lot on the 3.5L EcoBoost, and now the 2.7s are having the same problem.

Cam phasers again. Dealer replaced mine at no cost, but it took about 6 weeks. It’s a known issue with the 2.7L and also the F-150.

I’m dealing with the same thing.

Sounds like VCT rattle. Should be covered under warranty.

Check out Dave’s Auto on EcoBoost engines. They have some info on cam rollers, etc.

Same issue with the 2.7L cam phasers. Had mine replaced around 600 miles, not long after delivery. Mine was built in July 2023.

Could be the injectors—they can sometimes sound like knocking. Learned this from a Ford forum.

Might want to check your belts and pulleys too.
