Which one would you pick… 2023 4Runner or 2021 Bronco?

I’m looking at getting a new SUV. Right now, I drive a BMW 550i, which I love, but it struggles in the snow, and I know I’ll face issues sooner or later. I want to sell it and get something more versatile.

The 4Runner stands out because of its durability and reliability. I also like the rear window and the older design doesn’t bother me. On the other hand, I have a chance to buy a Bronco, which I absolutely love, but I’m unsure about its long-term performance.

Right now, I’m leaning toward a new 4Runner, but I’d really like to hear your opinions about what might make me happier in the long run.

UPDATE: 5/1/23

I ended up buying a new 4Runner TRD Pro, and I couldn’t be happier. It feels solid and has so much more utility than the Bronco.

Funny enough, the Bronco I was considering had a fuel pump failure just two weeks ago, and it had to be towed to the dealer for repairs. That Bronco was a 2021 First Edition with 25,000 miles, so it’s wild to me that such a big issue happened so early.

In the end, I’m thrilled with my choice and love my Toyota.

Do you mean a used Bronco against a new 4Runner? If that’s the case, I’d probably lean toward the 4Runner too.

Yes, it’s a used Bronco versus a new 4Runner. That’s what I’m thinking too.

What Audi did you have before? :face_with_monocle:

OP, I got a 2018 4Runner, and it’s a beast. You’ll love it. I think it looks better than the Bronco too, though the Badlands trim is pretty sweet. If you throw on 33” A/T tires and a 3” lift, it’s a tough choice.

Coming from a BMW, have you thought about a GX460? It’s on a solid platform with a V8. Have you driven both options yet? I think the 4Runner makes a better daily driver.

I once tested a Bronco at a car show, and the driver mentioned it’s great for off-roading but not as practical otherwise. He said the biggest complaint was cracked windshields due to the steep angle.

I’ve got a 1999 4Runner and a BMW 740Ld, so I get where you’re coming from. If you value reliability and love the rear window, go for the 4Runner. I see tons of them on trails out West. Broncos? Rarely. People are too scared to mess up their shiny, expensive ones.

Toyota, all day. Look at how many issues Broncos have had. Add in Toyota’s resale value, and it’s an easy choice.

Have you thought about the Lexus GX? It’s basically a 4Runner but fancier.

Not quite. There are some significant differences.

@Fallon
For starters, it has a V8 and AWD with a central locker.

Here’s an article breaking it down: DrivingLine.

If you don’t keep cars for long, go for the Bronco. But if you’re planning on keeping it over five years, the 4Runner wins for reliability.

A brand-new 4Runner versus a used Bronco? No contest. The Bronco might look cooler, but unless it’s way cheaper, Toyota all the way.

The 4Runner will last longer. Whatever performance edge the Bronco has, the Toyota makes up for in reliability.

Both are reliable in their own way, but they’re built for different purposes. It really depends on what you need.

@Brice
True. The Wrangler beats the 4Runner in performance, but most owners don’t actually go off-road.

The 4Runner is great for its purpose—reliable, tough, and holds its value. But if you’re coming from a BMW, maybe look into a used GX for a more refined ride.

I’d love a GX, but I want CarPlay, and the price point for the 4Runner makes more sense. I’d have to go with an older GX otherwise.
