I’m considering getting an SUV that can handle some off-road conditions like snow and rough terrain. I also want it to be decent for car camping, so the bigger, the better. Gas mileage matters to me, but I’m not expecting miracles. I looked at the 4Runner and Lexus SUVs, but they’re either too expensive or have similar mileage issues. Should I just go for the Bronco, or is there something else worth considering?
Sure, why not. It’s a solid choice.

Fair point!
I’ve seen Broncos do pretty well on trails. They struggle a bit with steep slopes and tricky terrain, but overall, they hold up. Just keep your load light if you plan on serious off-roading.
Whatever you choose, it’ll get beat up off-road. If you’re just driving dirt roads, any car will do, but for tougher trails, you’ll need something strong and likely older. I’ve got an ‘89 Dodge Raider, and every scratch on it tells a story.
@Jordan
Can your Raider handle highway speeds? I love how they look but worry they’d struggle above 60 mph.
@Jordan
You’ll want metal bumpers and rock sliders for sure.

Wait, are you serious about the armor?

Yeah, totally. Metal fenders and proper armor are essential for tougher trails.
The Bronco might be too small for you, but I’ve got a Jeep Wrangler 4xe and love it. It’s capable and even runs 20 miles on battery power.
Broncos get about 20 mpg in the base model. The higher trims with bigger tires are closer to 17-18 mpg, which is pretty similar to a 4Runner. My family has two 4Runners with 250k combined miles and zero issues, so I’m biased toward them.
The Bronco is decent if its size works for you. Personally, I find it a bit limited for cargo or towing. If camping is a priority, a Tahoe or Suburban might suit you better. I can fit a full mattress in my Suburban with the seats down.
@Vance
Good point. I’ve thought about towing a small trailer instead of car camping. I do like the Bronco’s look, though the mileage is less ideal compared to a Tahoe.

Broncos have lots of options and trim levels, which can get confusing. Just a heads-up—Ford’s having trouble meeting demand, so you might wait a while for one, especially with specific packages.

My dad’s Suburban gets around 21 mpg on the highway, which isn’t bad for something that size.
@Vance
I’ve got a V8 4Runner that tows up to 7,000 lbs and fits a mattress in the back. Just putting it out there.

What kind of hitch setup is that? Never heard of one like it.
I switched from a 4Runner to a Bronco last year. Best decision ever. No regrets. It’s fun to drive and feels like a fresh start every time I get in.

That’s tempting. What’s your take on the Bronco vs. Bronco Sport?
@Lennon
I went for the 2-door Bronco because I wanted the removable roof. It’s been a dream. Loved my 4Runner, but the Bronco feels lighter and more versatile. Gas mileage isn’t amazing, but it’s better than my old 4Runner.
